Things that are exactly alike are the same.

They’re eating the same thing for lunch. 

Notice that you almost always say ‘the same’.

She looks the same as her twin.

You can use ‘the same’ for a one person or thing over a period of time.

She’s the same girl I saw yesterday.

You use ‘the same as’ when comparing.

His name is the same as mine.

In casual speech ‘the same’ or ‘the same as’ can describe a verb.

I want to be treated the same as everyone else.

You can modify the meaning of ‘same’ with adverbs such as exactly, roughly or essentially.

The label is different, but the product is essentially the same.
